How to Make Titanium Bars

Titanium rod is a high strength, high strength ratio (specific strength), excellent corrosion resistance metal material, widely used in aerospace, chemical, biomedical, electronic and other fields. 1. The conventional titanium rod manufacturing process is to first melt the titanium sponge, press it into a block in a vacuum or inert atmosphere, and then make it into a titanium rod. Making titanium sponge is the first step of refining process of titanium ore, which will be leached, extracted and reduced through a series of refining steps to get titanium sponge in powder or block form.

2. Titanium sponge melting generally requires the use of electric or gas furnaces, the temperature control at 1000-1200 ℃, melting time will vary according to the melting temperature and the content of the oxide, melting time is usually 2-6 hours. This process is mainly to remove the impurities, oxides and other chemicals from the titanium sponge.

3. The melted titanium sponge is then compressed into a block by a high-pressure machine and then forged and rolled in vacuum or inert atmosphere in several processes to make titanium rods of different diameters and lengths. These processes include:

  (1) Hot forging: Titanium billets are heated to a certain temperature and hammered and extruded in a large hydraulic press to eliminate impurities and enhance the toughness and strength of titanium rods.

  (2) Rolling: The calcined titanium sponge is heated to a certain temperature and rolled into rods in a hot rolling mill.

  (3) Stretching: The temperature of titanium rod is controlled at high temperature, and one end is pinched with pliers in the stretching machine, and the other end is stretched with force, thus making the rod thinner, longer, stronger, and the surface smoother.

4. Finally, the titanium rods are subjected to surface treatment processes such as polishing and deburring in order to make finished titanium rods.

5. The key to the whole production process is the control of the oxide and impurity content in the titanium sponge, as well as the control of the temperature, pressure and other parameters of the titanium rod forming. This requires highly accurate instrumentation and operational skills to ensure that the final manufactured titanium rods meet product quality standards.

First, the choice of raw materials. The quality of titanium rods is closely related to the choice of raw materials. Generally require low impurities and oxygen content in raw materials, and high purity, toughness and strength. Second, the control of the production process. Third, quality inspection is strictly controlled. After the production is completed, a comprehensive and detailed inspection should be carried out to test the shape, size, hardness, strength, corrosion resistance and other indicators one by one, and only after passing the factory sales.
