Introduction to Sintered Metal Filters
Sintered metal filters represent a state-of-the-art filtration solution, crafted through a distinctive process that employs metal powders formed under heat and pressure to create a rigid, porous structure.

Sintered metal filters offer several advantages over other types of filters:
● High filtration efficiency: The uniform pore structure of sintered metal filters allows for efficient filtration of particles down to submicron sizes.
● Durability: Sintered metal filters are highly resistant to corrosion, high temperatures, and mechanical stress, making them suitable for demanding applications.
● Chemical compatibility: These filters can withstand exposure to a wide range of chemicals without degradation, ensuring long-term performance.
● Ease of cleaning: Sintered metal filters can be easily cleaned and reused, reducing maintenance costs and waste generation.
● Customizability: The pore size, shape, and thickness of sintered metal filters can be tailored to meet specific filtration requirements.
A sintered metal filter is porous, often, cylindrical metallic part manufactured through the process of sintering. Copper and metal alloys are mixed together and fused through high temperatures achieving porosity and creating a mesh. These filters are used from household appliances to industrial/chemical plants to greater effects.
Sintered metal filters perform a very specific task and it is useful in multiple fields of applications, depending upon the microns of porousness.
So, here are a few places where we see a lot of application of sintered metal filter:
● Automotive industries
Vehicles need clean air and one of the best ways to make sure dust, dirt and unwanted liquid do not overflow into the exhaust system, sintered metal filters are used. From being a vital element in the exhaust pipe to being used as a filter covers for air filter of the engine, there are various use of sintered metal filter in automotive industry. They are even used as sound dampers in throttle and exhaust system.
● Domestic and electronics industry
Filter covers have been used in domestic appliances for years now. Vacuum cleaners, dampers in blenders, filtration units and water purifiers all use sintered metal filters. One of the biggest and prevalent applicants of sintered metal filter has been the domestic appliance industry.
Passing of clean air to microprocessors, transistors, and sensitive performing machines have increased their used of sintered mesh. Controlled and clean air is necessary for making sure high-performance electronics are functioning at their peak potential and sintered metal filtered/meshes help realize that potential.
● Chemical and pharmaceutical industry
Playing around with various chemicals that are harmful to handle, most likely flammable and dangerous if taken lightly, are just the daily precautions of a chemical or pharmaceutical industry. Foreign substances cannot be allowed to impure the material at hand and sintered metal filter elements as well as profiles are prominent in this industry. High pressure, different viscosity level and corrosion properties result in these industries trusting sintered metal filters for their filtration needs.
● Nuclear and energy industry
High pressure situations are where application of sintered metal filters is good for. One of the benefits of using them is you can manage pressure flow rate and output based on the microns of porousness present on the surface of the filter. Inside nuclear reactors where clean water is used as coolant, sintered metal filters play a huge role. Energy industry uses high pressure and corrosion resistant filters.
A sintered metal filter can be prepared by following steps:
● A cylindrical mold is placed vertically with its open end facing upward.
● Liquid and fibers are pushed into the mold. The fibers can be of stainless steel, nickel, thallium, titanium, aluminum, tungsten, copper, metal oxides, or ceramic materials.
● A pressure differential is created in the mold to expel the liquid. The applied pressure makes it fiber cohesive. The cohesive fiber coheres to form a substantially tube-shaped structure.
● The extruded tube-shaped structure is removed from the mold and sintered to obtain a porous sintered metal fiber filter element having one end and another end.
● Finally, densification of both ends of the filter is done.

Each sintered material has a specific working temperature range.
Some could be hard to stand at high temperatures like sintered plastic filters could work at 150°C approximately at most, or thermal degradation may occur.
Some have better heat resistance as sintered ceramic elements' working temperature can be up to 1000°C.
If the operating temperature is too high that filters can't withstand, the pores gap will change, affecting the filtration efficiency. On the contrary, when the operating temperature goes too low, the whole structure may be brittle, and easy to be damaged.
Sintered Metal Filter Design
The sintered metal filter design for liquid/solids separation is selected which produces the required filtrate, minimizes backwash or blowdown and maximizes throughput. Three types of filter configurations are described as follows:
Outside-in filtration
Traditional liquid/solids barrier separation occurs on the outer perimeter of a closed-end tubular filter element (LSP). A gas assisted pneumatic hydro-pulse backwash has proven to be the most effective cleaning method for sintered porous metal filters.
Inside-out filtration
Liquid/solid barrier separation occurs on the inside of a closed-end tubular filter element (LSI). LSI backwash modes include:
● Full shell slurry backwash.
● Empty shell slurry backwash.
● Empty shell and empty element wet cake backwash and d.) Empty housing wet cake discharge.
Inside-out Multimode filtration:
Liquid/solids (barrier or crossflow) separation occurs on the inside of open-ended tubular filter element (LSM and LSX). Elements are sealed within two tube sheets, thereby allowing for either top or bottom feed inlet. The LSM filter, with a feed recirculation feature, has proven itself in several continuous loop reactor systems. The downward velocity controls the cake thickness of the catalyst with the lower the velocity resulting in a thicker cake. Filter backwash modes are similar to LSI backwash modes and also includes a bump-and-settle type backwash that allows concentration of solids without draining the filter element or housing. Continuous loop reactor system may not require backwashing.
Scale-ability of the filtration systems allows for accommodating high flow rates and increased solids capacity. Filtration units are suitable for batch or continuous processes. Single housing filter systems are recommended where flow rates allow and flow can be stopped for a few minutes prior to backwash, or if off line periods can be tolerated for maintenance. Two filter dual systems are recommended where continuous flow is required and short periods of off line can be tolerated for maintenance. Three filter systems are recommended for continuous operation even during maintenance periods.
Characteristics of Sintered Metal Filters
Sintered metal filters have great intrinsic strength, so they can be used with a much wider pressure differential than most other filter materials. The accuracy of the p/m process means you can specify particle extraction from 10 to 50 microns. Powder metal filters can generally be cleaned simply by backwashing or ultrasonic cleaning.
When torturous conditions propel high-temperature gases down a sealed channel, a standard screening solution feels the strain. All-metal sintered filters and silencers endure under these parts-corrosive conditions. The disc or cone-shaped powder metal product allows a selected fluid to travel through the sintered mass, but suspended particulates are removed from the stream. Furthermore, the powder compaction process is finitely variable, which means filter permeability can be adjusted. When the metal sintering process addresses filtering needs, a typical bore pitch of 10 to 50 microns is easily achieved.
Sintered metal filters are built to strip away dynamic stresses as effectively as they deal with liquid-suspended particulates. As that force-cancelling function commences, gaseous loads are nullified, air exhausts are silenced, and dynamically funnelled noise is muted. In essence, these products are built for pneumatic, chemical, and hydraulic systems, places where propagating vibrations must be effectively reduced until they comply with industry-accepted noise regulations.
In oil-filled hydraulics and pneumatic equipment, sintered metal filters handle large pressure differentials while removing the piped contaminants that are flowing in that system. The powder metal compacting process produces screen bore diameters that vary within a few microns, so chemical treatment plants also employ these corrosion-resistant filtering solutions. Finally, noise emission control falls under the jurisdiction of this metal-only filter type, with the porous alloy sieves dismissing the pressurised air and other gases so that the exhaust from the filter is properly silenced. That last feature targets air compressors and other air-powered equipment.
